Medical tourism is the travel of people to other countries with the purpose of getting health care. Not only does health tourism give people an opportunity to get qualified medical treatment, it also lets them see new countries, see the sights and find out more about local traditions.

medical tourism ukraine

Health tourism is getting increasingly popular for a number of reasons, which include:

  • health insurance in the home country doesn’t cover the treatment of certain diseases;
  • the clinics in the home country don’t have necessary equipment or quality health care;
  • the cost of medical services in another country is substantially lower than it is in the home country.

Lately Ukraine has been ranked very high on the list of top destinations for health tourism. Medical tourists come here from a variety of locations including Asia, the CIS countries, Germany, France, the UK and North America.

The demand for the following specialists has been the highest:

  • dentists;
  • ophthalmologists;
  • surgeons.

For instance, the cost of high quality dental care services in Ukraine is 4 to 7 times cheaper than it is in many other countries. This is why thousands of medical tourists come to Ukraine every year to get dental treatment and oral health care services. Getting dental implants has been especially popular since in Europe and in the US this procedure costs around 2,000 euros and 3,000 dollars respectively, while in Ukraine its price varies between 500 and 800 dollars.

Plastic surgery is another popular branch of medical care. First, the actual operation is much cheaper in Ukraine, and second, you don’t need to pay the surgeon’s fee, which is the case in many other countries.

Spa towns and sanatoriums are yet another reason why medical tourists choose Ukraine as their health care destination. Truskavets, Morshyn, Khmelnyk, Berdiansk, sanatoriums and spas located in Carpathian Ruthenia are popular with both Ukrainians and guests from other countries, who are attracted by Ukraine’s mild climate and beautiful nature in combination with comfortable accommodation and board as well as quality and inexpensive health care services.

International students studying in Ukraine consider high quality medical services at affordable prices one of the biggest advantages of getting higher education in Ukraine.

Additionally, recent devaluation of the national currency has made the cost of medical services even cheaper for medical tourists.

Tourism: 6 Wonders of Ukraine

In 2007 the Internet community picked 6 wonders of Ukraine out of 21 nominees. Here are the sights that made it to the list.

1. National Historical and Architectural Reserve “Kamianets”. The reserve has an area of 121 ha and includes the Old Town surrounded by the Smotrych river and the adjacent canyon, the Castle Bridge, the Old Castle and the New Castle. The Old Castle, constructed in the 12th century, is the most famous sight in Kamianets-Podilskyi. The castle consists of 11 towers and each of them has its own history. The tallest tower is called The Pope’s Tower, as it was constructed at the expense of Pope Julius II. It also goes by the name of Karmeliuk’s Tower, since the hero of Ukraine’s national liberation struggle Ustym Karmeliuk was jailed in this tower three times.

2. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is an Orthodox Christian cave monastery erected in the times of Prince Yaroslav the Wise by monks Anthony and Theodosius. In the 11th century Lavra became the center from which Christianity spread throughout Kievan Rus. Lavra survived two world wars and Soviet persecution. In 1990 Lavra was added to the World Heritage List.

3. Reserve “Khotyn Fortress”. Built in the 10th century by Vladimir the Great, Khotyn is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. Khotyn was one of the outposts of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia. In the 1230s – 1240s the fortress’s wooden fortifications were replaced with the stone ones. Today Khotyn is one of the biggest cities in Chernivtsi Oblast. A number of films have been shot in the fortress, including Zakhar Berkut, The Ballad of the Valiant Knight Ivanhoe, Three Musketeers, The Black Arrow, The Old Fortress, Robin Hood’s Arrows.

4. Sofiyivsky Park. The park has an area of 154.7 ha and is located on the outskirts of Uman, an old city in Cherkasy Oblast. The park was established in 1796 by a rich Polish nobleman Stanislaw Potocki, and was meant to be presented as a birthday gift to his beautiful Greek wife Sophia in May 1802. Incidentally, the idea of the park’s creation belonged to Sophia herself. The number of tourists coming to Uman to see Sofiyivsky Park is as big in the winter, as it is in the summer.

5. Saint Sophia’s Cathedral is one of the biggest Christian sanctuaries in Eastern Europe and a historical center of Kyiv metropoly. The Tale of Bygone Years says that the cathedral was erected in 1037. It has survived a series of important historic events and has been greatly damaged a few times. In 1990 the cathedral complex was added to the World Heritage List.

6. National Reserve “Khortytsia”. Khortytsia is the biggest island on the Dnipro river. The benefits of studying in Ukraine: high quality, low price

Today over 60 thousand international students from 150 countries are getting their higher education in Ukraine. And this number is increasing every year. The popularity of Ukraine as a place for getting higher education is caused by a number of reasons. Ukrainian system of higher education includes institutions of three types: universities, institutes, academies. They prepare high quality specialists for a lot of different fields. Studying in Ukraine, not only do international students get a profound theoretical knowledge base, but also a lot of practical skills. Ukraine’s educational system widely implements advanced technologies into the educational process, which is another key advantage of studying in Ukraine.
Leading Ukrainian universities have long histories, and many of them are acknowledged in the whole world. Ukraine became a part of the Bologna process in 2005 and has common academic degrees and periods of study with 46 other countries, which increases the mobility of students and graduates.

All of these advantages of getting higher education in Ukraine are available for international students at a price that is substantially lower than in European, CIS, and North American countries.

Other advantages

Other attractive factors include flexible terms of entering Ukraine and the simplicity of becoming a student. There is a visa-free regime for citizens of the CIS and a number of European countries, Canada, Israel and Japan. Citizens of other countries can get visa support. International students don’t need to pass any tests or examinations to enroll in a Ukrainian university.

Students can choose the most suitable form of studying: full-time, part-time or distance learning. The instruction can be conducted in Ukrainian, Russian and English, and international students can choose the language they feel most comfortable with.

International applicants are offered preparatory courses, which last 6-10 months, during which they can learn Ukrainian or Russian and improve their knowledge of major disciplines.
Ukrainian universities offer a variety of courses: humanities, medicine, dentistry, IT technologies, economics, law, engineering etc. Students can enrol in a BA, MA, or a postgraduate program.

Dormitory rooms, which international students can rent at a very low price, are yet another advantage of studying in Ukraine. Living next to Ukrainian peers, international students get a great opportunity to improve their language skills and make new friends.
