Information About “Kompis”(Department of Lviv Polytechnic for foreign students)

Since 1991 preparatory department gives educational services for foreigners who aspire studying at higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Preparatory department provides its services on the ground of the license issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (seria АВ № 420484 as of September 16th, 2008) and acts in obedience with the law of Ukraine on “Education” and governing documents of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The core activities of the preparatory department at the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” are:

  • pre-university training of foreign citizens for the enrolment at Higher Educational Institutions of Ukraine
  • study of Ukrainian language

The main aim of pre-university training of foreign citizens is to give international students knowledge, skills and habits necessary for a successful education at Higher Educational Establishments of Ukraine and create conditions necessary for a quick adaptation of foreigners to a new sociocultural environment.

Preparatory department provides training in engineering and technical, biomedical and humane specializations. Majority of graduates enter the National University “Lviv Polytechnic”. However, international students can also enter other Higher Educational Institutions of Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa and other Ukrainian cities.

Over the years of its existence, the department has trained over 1000 foreigners from more than 30 countries.

Education

Preparatory department at the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” trains students for the enrolment at higher educational institutions of Ukraine with engineering and technical, biomedical and humane specializations as majors. Training is provided in accordance with the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Study groups are formed in accordance with the specialties chosen by the students. Education at the preparatory department is done 5 times a week (Saturday and Sunday are off days), 6 academic hours a day.

Training of foreigners lasts from October 1st till the 1st of July of the next year. Academic year at the preparatory department is divided into two semesters:

  • I semester lasts from October to January and ends with the examination period
  • II semester lasts from February to June and ends with a 2-week examination period.

Preparatory department students are provided with all educational materials and literature.
During the course of education, students pass test in the main subjects, which helps determine training level of each student.

At the end of the I semester students take examination in the Ukrainian language and pass tests in other subjects. Students who fail the exams are expelled from the preparatory department.

Upon completing a training program, students take final examinations in majors.

After a successful completion of final examinations, graduates get training certificate approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This certificate entitles graduates studying at higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Students who have failed final exams, go back to the homeland or take a refresher course next year.

Preparatory department students participate in All-Ukraine Olympiads in the studied subjects. Selection of participants is done in two stages: the 1st – among the students of the preparatory department “KOMPIS”, and the 2nd among the international students of preparatory departments of Ukraine. Habitation

General Information About National University “Lviv Polytechnic”

Facilities and Resources: 27 academic and laboratory buildings and technopark.

Lviv Polytechnic is one of the oldest academic technical schools in Europe and the first academic technical school opened in Ukraine. The first students entered this technical academy on the 4th of october, 1844. The first director was Florian Shindler.

Lviv Polytechnic includes 27 academic and laboratory buildings, 3 gymnasiums (in Lviv, Drohobych and Sokal), 3 lyceums (in Novoyavorivsk, Vuzlove village, Radehiv district and in Skole), geodesic field in Berezhany, astronomic and geodetic observatory in Shatsk, 15 dormitories, technical park, sport complex, sports and recreation camps, located in Mykolaiv region and in picturesque Karpaty, and also students’ health centre, hospital and prophylactic sanatorium.

Students and staff members have an access to two academic sports buildings, with 9 specialized gyms, swimming pool, ski depot, sports summer area and shooting gallery. Physical education department and sport club organise diverse educational events, aimed to improve sportsmanship in 23 kinds of sport, as well as competitions between various universities, sports events and health days. Men’s basketball team successfully vindicates the honour of Lviv region on the national sports arena in the A and Super Leagues. In 2000 men’s and women’s table tennis teams, women’s water polo, handball and badminton teams, men’s volleyball teams and also sports aerobics, orienteering and kettlebell lifting teams won regional championships of higher educational establishments.

Lviv Polytechnic has the fame of the most democratic higher educational establishment in Ukraine, where Ukrainians, enslaved by different occupation regimes, could get higher education. The university is proud of its notable alumni (among which are Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevych, Oleksa Hasyn, Katheryna Zarytska, Petro Franko) who played an important role in the social, political and cultural life of Ukraine. It unites nine amateur-talent groups, five of which are folk. They are: symphony orchestra, student’s chorus “Gaudeamus”, dance ensemble “Virnist”, male chorus of faculty and staff “Orpheus” and ensemble of song and music “Zaspiv”.

Lviv Polytechnic is one of the oldest higher educational establishments in Ukraine and has a high rating among young people. It has exceptional academic, scientific, art and culture and also sports traditions. According to the rating of the Canadian Association of Engineers, Lviv Polytechnic is in the list of the world’s 20 most prestigious higher educational establishments. On the results of the integrated rating of Ukrainian higher educational establishments, which was held by the International Personnel Academy in 2000, Lviv Polytechnic joined the list of top ten Ukrainian universities. Integrated rating results were assessed based on the survey of young people at the age of 16-25 and also a group of experts that consisted of rectors (pro-rectors) of higher education institutions, having III-IV levels of accreditation, designated representatives of line ministries and also representatives of regional and city departments of education and employment centers.

Scopus University Ranking 2014

In August 2014 the largest abstract and citation database Scopus revealed that Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University remains Ukraine’s top higher education institution by the number of citations of academic publications.

The results of the ranking are based on the figures provided by Scopus database, which is an instrument of tracking the citations of articles published by an institution or its employee in academic journals. Scopus database continuously indexes over 20,000 scientific journals, 370 book series and 5.5 mln conference materials. Among the indexed publications 47 % are published in Western Europe, 33 % – in North America, 9 % are produced in Asia-Pacific region, and 5 % come from Eastern Europe.

The universities are ranked according to the h-index which measures the quantity of academic publications and the quantity of their citations.
120 higher education institutions in Ukraine were added to Scopus database on August 27, 2014, which is four more universities than at the beginning of the year.

According to the ranking, the following Ukrainian institutions have the highest positions: Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University (72), Kharkiv National Vasyl Karazin University (51), and Odesa National Illia Mechnikov University (42).

Lviv National Ivan Franko University (41) is ranked fourth. The fifth position is taken by Chernivtsi National Yurii Fedkovych University (38). National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (35) has the sixth place in the ranking.

Maksim Gorky Donetsk National University (34), Dnipropetrovsk National Oles Honchar University (29), and National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (29) are on the seventh, eighth and ninth position in ranking. Lviv Polytechnic National University came tenth with 27 points.

Scopus is a bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations for academic journal articles. It covers over 20,000 journals in the scientific, technical, medical sciences and humanities. It is owned by a publishing corporation Elsevier. Scopus data is also used in the world’s best universities rankings, such as Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings.
