Lviv Polytechnic is one of the oldest academic technical schools in Europe and the first academic technical school opened in Ukraine. The first students entered this technical academy on the 4th of october, 1844. The first director was Florian Shindler.

Lviv Polytechnic includes 27 academic and laboratory buildings, 3 gymnasiums (in Lviv, Drohobych and Sokal), 3 lyceums (in Novoyavorivsk, Vuzlove village, Radehiv district and in Skole), geodesic field in Berezhany, astronomic and geodetic observatory in Shatsk, 15 dormitories, technical park, sport complex, sports and recreation camps, located in Mykolaiv region and in picturesque Karpaty, and also students’ health centre, hospital and prophylactic sanatorium.

Students and staff members have an access to two academic sports buildings, with 9 specialized gyms, swimming pool, ski depot, sports summer area and shooting gallery. Physical education department and sport club organise diverse educational events, aimed to improve sportsmanship in 23 kinds of sport, as well as competitions between various universities, sports events and health days. Men’s basketball team successfully vindicates the honour of Lviv region on the national sports arena in the A and Super Leagues. In 2000 men’s and women’s table tennis teams, women’s water polo, handball and badminton teams, men’s volleyball teams and also sports aerobics, orienteering and kettlebell lifting teams won regional championships of higher educational establishments.

Lviv Polytechnic has the fame of the most democratic higher educational establishment in Ukraine, where Ukrainians, enslaved by different occupation regimes, could get higher education. The university is proud of its notable alumni (among which are Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevych, Oleksa Hasyn, Katheryna Zarytska, Petro Franko) who played an important role in the social, political and cultural life of Ukraine. Lviv Polytechnic is known as a prominent center of education, science and national dignity.

The university has wide external economic relations. We cooperate with a number of foreign companies and have contracts for the export of scientific and technological activities. Agreements on Scientific and Technical Cooperation have been signed with the universities of the USA, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, France, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and other countries. This partnership guarantees international student swap and also international training for lecturers and specialists. Every year, dozens of our students go to study in Europe and America. Such mutual exchange of scientists and specialists supports international recognition of Lviv Polytechnic and well as Ukrainian scientific idea.

University scientists have developed advanced scientific research approaches. These approaches meet the needs of Ukraine’s national economy, its western region and neighbouring countries, with which Ukraine develops mutual economic and scientific relations.

A great work on the promotion of Ukrainian culture, organization of leisure time, and improvement of creative abilities of students and faculty is done by the organization “Prosvita”. It unites nine amateur-talent groups, five of which are folk. They are: symphony orchestra, student’s chorus “Gaudeamus”, dance ensemble “Virnist”, male chorus of faculty and staff “Orpheus” and ensemble of song and music “Zaspiv”.

Lviv Polytechnic is one of the oldest higher educational establishments in Ukraine and has a high rating among young people. It has exceptional academic, scientific, art and culture and also sports traditions. According to the rating of the Canadian Association of Engineers, Lviv Polytechnic is in the list of the world’s 20 most prestigious higher educational establishments. On the results of the integrated rating of Ukrainian higher educational establishments, which was held by the International Personnel Academy in 2000, Lviv Polytechnic joined the list of top ten Ukrainian universities. Integrated rating results were assessed based on the survey of young people at the age of 16-25 and also a group of experts that consisted of rectors (pro-rectors) of higher education institutions, having III-IV levels of accreditation, designated representatives of line ministries and also representatives of regional and city departments of education and employment centers.
