In August 2014 the largest abstract and citation database Scopus revealed that Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University remains Ukraine’s top higher education institution by the number of citations of academic publications.
The results of the ranking are based on the figures provided by Scopus database, which is an instrument of tracking the citations of articles published by an institution or its employee in academic journals. Scopus database continuously indexes over 20,000 scientific journals, 370 book series and 5.5 mln conference materials. Among the indexed publications 47 % are published in Western Europe, 33 % – in North America, 9 % are produced in Asia-Pacific region, and 5 % come from Eastern Europe.
The universities are ranked according to the h-index which measures the quantity of academic publications and the quantity of their citations.
120 higher education institutions in Ukraine were added to Scopus database on August 27, 2014, which is four more universities than at the beginning of the year.
According to the ranking, the following Ukrainian institutions have the highest positions: Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University (72), Kharkiv National Vasyl Karazin University (51), and Odesa National Illia Mechnikov University (42).
Lviv National Ivan Franko University (41) is ranked fourth. The fifth position is taken by Chernivtsi National Yurii Fedkovych University (38). National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (35) has the sixth place in the ranking.
Maksim Gorky Donetsk National University (34), Dnipropetrovsk National Oles Honchar University (29), and National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (29) are on the seventh, eighth and ninth position in ranking. Lviv Polytechnic National University came tenth with 27 points.
